Sky is conducting a 4K Ultra High Definition (4K-UHD) test during the broadcast of the All Blacks v Australia match on Saturday 28 September, 6pm.
4K-UHD is a high-quality video format that offers four times the resolution of High Definition (HD). The higher picture resolution results in sharper, more vivid detail, allowing viewers to get closer to the action, with vibrant and intense colours and more true-to-life picture, when watching on a 4K compatible TV.
Sky Sport customers with the new Sky Box will also be able to watch the match in 4K-UHD on a temporary pop-up channel, Sky Sport 1 UHD, which will play on channel 251. Note that this temporary pop-up channel will not be visible for customers on the legacy (black) Sky Box, Sky Pod, Sky Go or Sky Sport Now.
All Sky Sport, Sky Sport Now and Sky Go customers will be able to watch the match as normal in HD, either in English on Sky Sport 1 or in Te Reo Māori on Sky Sport 2.
As this is an initial test of 4K-UHD, some things will be a little different for this test broadcast:
- During ad breaks, no ads will play out. Instead, there will be a stadium-wide shot with no sound.
- There will be no Te Reo Māori commentary, alternative commentary or subtitles available on the 4K-UHD broadcast of the match. Viewers who wish to use these features should watch the broadcast in HD.
These omitted features will be included when Sky makes more sport available in 4K-UHD on the new Sky Box experience next year.
Following the event, the game will only be available to watch On Demand in HD, not 4K-UHD.
